MUG is the acronym for Micro Focus User Groups. They are organizations founded and managed by individuals who share the same interest in Micro Focus products and solutions, COBOL, as well as other legacy languages. And because MUGs are made up of folks with similar interests, the sharing of knowledge is also secondary to the friendships that are created.
MUGs offer insight and support for technical questions. Through a candid and relaxed environment, people are able to learn more about the technology that drives their industries. From regular meetings, to networking, to hearing guest speakers, to interacting at interesting/fun venues, to getting sneak peeks to new Micro Focus products, the benefits go on and on - and of course the camaraderie that comes from being a Micro Focus user.
Ultimately, each meeting's activities are up to each MUG and of course depend on the size of each MUG. That said meetings can be structured with brief updates followed by, guest speakers, demos, news, etc. The bottom line is that all meetings are packed with tons of information you want to hear and know about. Above all are meetings are a blast. Some will be held in special venues like bowling alleys others in a company meeting room, but no matter where they're held, you'll always be among friends.
While MUGs lend the Micro Focus corporate name, they are independent organizations run by its volunteers. And while Micro Focus promotes and supports the MUGs, Micro Focus does not manage, own or direct them. As far as how each individual MUG is organized, that again, depends on the size of each. For example, a smaller MUG of say 8-10 people may only require the President to facilitate its activities. Conversely a MUG of 15+ will most likely require a President, Vice and Secretary to ensure the MUG runs smoothly. And of course, each MUG will most likely be supported by volunteers who help from time to time when needed.
Well, if geeks are incredibly cool, interesting, fun people, well then yes. But we hear what you're asking. Members will come from a range of backgrounds and experience levels. Some maybe academics, students or professors and some may be just interested in COBOL. No matter who it is, they're all welcome.
As MUGs located in North America are officially re-launching, during the initial months there will most likely be no membership dues during this time period. However as MUG chapters mature, some groups will have fees, others will structure costs to be paid at the time it's incurred (e.g. dinner at a restaurant), and others will not. Again, it is the sole decision of each MUG with no influence from Micro Focus corporate.
Where can I get more information about user groups in my area?

How do I give user groups a try?
Well after you've found a group that closest to you, please feel free to contact that group's president. He or she will be more then happy to answer any questions you may have.
I can't attend meetings. Can user groups still help me?
Probably not. Just kidding. Of course user groups can still help - well, at least to a degree. Some of the material that's presented at each group will most likely be produced in a downloadable format. That's good news for you, but if you want your questions answered you'll need to physically be there.
